Ingredients

  • 500ml milk
  • hot chocolate mix of choice
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 10 black peppercorns
  • 6 cloves
  • 6 green cardamom pods
  • squirty whipped cream (optional)
  • sweetener of choice (optional)
  • nutmeg freshly grated (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the spices by placing the cinnamon stick, peppercorns, cloves, and cardamom pods in a paper bag. Gently crush the spices with a rolling pin or meat tenderiser on a chopping board.
  • Simmer the milk in a small saucepan, gently heat the milk with the crushed spices. Bring the mixture to a simmer, while whisking occasionally.
  • Reduce heat to low and whisk in your preferred hot chocolate powder. If using a sweetener, add it now and stir well until completely dissolved. Ensure all ingredients are well combined and have a smooth consistency.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat. Pour the hot chocolate through a tea strainer into heat-resistant glasses or mugs, filling them ¾ full. Top with whipped cream and other sprinkle toppings of choice and a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg (optional).

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of hot chocolate powder depending on the brand and your desired level of sweetness.
  • Taste the hot chocolate before adding sweetener. Some hot chocolate mixes are already quite sweet.
  • Experiment with different spice combination for a unique twist.
