Cheese and Chive French Toast
A French toast recipe that is impressive yet quick and easy to make. This savoury cheese and chive version makes for a great breakfast, brunch, or delicious lunch! It’s also a great way to use up leftover bread.
Ingredients
- 2 free range eggs
- 100ml whole milk
- 50g medium Cheddar cheese, grated
- 25g double Gloucester cheese, grated
- 25g Red Leicester cheese, grated
- 5g chives, 20 strands approx.
- ½tsp garlic granules
- salt pinch
- freshly ground black pepper, pinch
- 4 medium white loaf bread slices
- 50g unsalted butter for frying
Instructions
- In a in a small bowl, whisk eggs together with the garlic, chopped chives (if you like, keep aside a little of the chives for garish), salt, pepper, and grated cheddar cheese. Transfer the mixture into a shallow baking dish.
- Cut the bread slices diagonally into halves to create triangular pieces. Over a medium heat, melt the butter in a large frying pan.
- Dip each triangular slice of bread in the cheesy egg mixture and pan fry the over a medium heat for a couple of minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
- Take off the pan and place on a napkin to absorb any excess butter. Serve immediately!
Notes
Any leftovers can be refrigerated and stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheated in the microwave or air fryer.
For a large crowd, cook a batch in large frying pan and keep warm in a preheated 160c fan oven until ready to serve up to your gathering.
The quantity of butter required will vary on the type of frying pan (ideally non-stick), bread absorbency.
